Brother, I love you legally !!
“Brother I love you, but the day you get married, I shall no more hug you.”
One afternoon, my sister-in law calls me up at her place. “Listen Purple, your brother’s married now. Things change after marriage. You shouldn’t cuddle or hug him anymore. Neither should you expect the same sisterly-care game to continue. Even if he continues, you should know where to draw the line.”
Miss Purple is me, a nineteen year old girl, who still loves to hang socks on Christmas eve. I am just like any other teenager, who doesn’t want to grow up, yet is maturing in her own trance ways.
I have a brother, an elder brother. He is not my blood-brother, neither is he any cousin. He is my brother just because I call him my brother and he calls me his sister. To be honest, we both accept and love each other just as any other brother-and sister.
He got married with a beautiful and sensible country girl. But I never expected such words from her. So orthodox in her views; rather so small in her perception of mine.
I wonder if she worries of her own personal space and time; or if she’s afraid of the questions that society might ask of who is Purple?
“How can a non relative sister be so attached to her brother, and how can you allow her , now that you are his wife?”
Just because I am not a sister on some legal papers, I hold no rights to hug a man whom I whole heartedly regard and love as my real brother.
Just because I am amongst one of those beings on Earth who hold the virtue to procreate, I hold no rights to hug my non-blood brother.
